Seismic reliability of Italian code‐conforming bridges

Seismic reliability assessment of selected bridge structures code-conforming with respect to the current Italian practice is carried out. Two viaducts, tall and shallow, two highway overpasses, traditional seat-type or integral abutments, are considered. Each structure ideally placed at three reference sites, that is, Milan, Naples L'Aquila, characterised by low, moderate high seismic hazard, respectively. At each site, a soil profile representative typical local conditions defined for foundation design, site response analysis soil-structure interaction modelling. Probabilistic hazard used in conjunction multiple-stripe non-linear dynamic analysis, featuring conditional-spectrum compatible ground motions, establish failure rate purposely functionality-related performance levels. It confirmed decreasing increasing design action, already observed other structural types, it shown abutment overpasses tend be more reliable than ones, even seismically isolated ones. The results larger interest given closeness code Eurocode.
